Baby lying on a plain white sheet in even daylight. We clean up the background to plain white and crop to 35×45 mm – your baby's face stays exactly as shot.

A parent's hand in the photo is on the Passport Office's list of unacceptable examples. Reshoot lying flat.

Shadows and uneven lighting are also on that list. Move to soft daylight and shoot again.

How to Take an Australian Passport Photo of a Baby at Home

  1. 1
    Step 1

Lay your baby on a white sheet in soft daylight

Smooth white sheet near a window, out of direct sun. Keep hands, toys and dummies out and take a burst from straight above.

    • Even light
    • No hands or toys
    • Eyes
    • Plain background
    2
    Step 2

Upload for a free check and a clean background

We check tilt, shadows, sharpness and anything else in the frame, then crop to 35×45 mm with the face at 32–36 mm. We never retouch your baby.

  2. 3
    Step 3

Print on a dye-sublimation printer, not inkjet

Take the 4×6 sheet to a photo shop with a dye-sublimation printer and print on glossy paper of at least 200 gsm. Cut out two identical photos and bring them to the post office with your application.

Newborn Passport Photo Australia: What Gets Photos Turned Away

Australian passport photo baby size: 35–40 × 45–50 mm, head 32–36 mm

Photos must be 35–40 mm wide and 45–50 mm high, with 32–36 mm from chin to crown. The face must be centred, facing the camera, with both edges of the face clearly visible.

  • 35–40 × 45–50 mm
  • Chin to crown 32–36 mm
  • Face centred, both edges visible

Passport photo for baby: no parent's hand, no objects, no one else

For children under 3, no one else can be visible in the photo. The Passport Office lists a parent's hand and objects in the photo as unacceptable. Lay your baby flat so you don't need to hold them.

  • No hands or arms in frame
  • No toys or other objects
  • Only your baby in the photo

Under 3: mouth may be open, eyes open to be safe

Children under 3 may have their mouth open. Anyone over 3 must face the camera with eyes open and a neutral expression. The official page doesn't say whether a younger baby's eyes can be closed, so we ask for open eyes.

  • Under 3: open mouth is fine
  • Over 3: eyes open, neutral expression
  • No retouching or skin smoothing

Printing Australian passport photos: dye-sublimation, glossy, at least 200 gsm

Prints must be in colour, from a dye-sublimation printer rather than an inkjet, on heavy glossy photo paper of at least 200 gsm. A home inkjet printer doesn't qualify, so use a photo shop.

  • Dye-sublimation, not inkjet
  • Glossy, at least 200 gsm
  • 2 identical photos

Australian baby passport photo requirements, in short

A child's application needs two identical printed photos – you bring them to a participating post office even if you fill in the form online. They must be 35–40 × 45–50 mm with the face 32–36 mm chin to crown, on a plain white or light grey background, printed in colour by dye-sublimation on glossy paper of at least 200 gsm, and less than 6 months old. Under 3s may have their mouth open, but a parent's hand in the photo is unacceptable. (Australian Passport Office)

An honest note on photo services in Australia

The Passport Office recommends professional providers, says it doesn't recommend online services or apps, and lists a background that is "not plain and edited" as unacceptable. That's why we only tidy the background, never your baby, and why a real white sheet is still the best start. If a photo you made with us is rejected, contact our support with the notice for a full refund.

What you still need to do

  • Print the sheet at a photo shop with a dye-sublimation printer.
  • Have your guarantor sign the back of one photo: "This is a true photo of [child's full name]".
  • Bring both photos and the application to a participating post office.
